AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS - The Breed

Australian Shepherds aka "Aussies" are even-tempered wonderful pets, remaining puppy-like even in their adult years. This spirited dog makes a good watchdog for the home and are excellent with kids,  they love to frolic and play!  They are a devoted, loyal friend and are naturally protective. Warm,  lively, very agile and conscientious - they are eager to please. Australian Shepherds are known for their high intelligent and are easy to train.  The Aussie is gentle with human friends, though they can be strong and aggressive when working with livestock. If you have the right temperament the Aussie is the friend for you!

The exact origin of the Australian Shepherd is unknown.   However, it is generally accepted that it evolved from sheep dogs imported into the Western U.S. by the Basque shepherds from the Pyrenees mountain region of Spain.  The Australian Shepherd was developed as a herding breed and most will exhibit herding traits.

Aussies are extremely intelligent and devoted to their families.   They are a moderate sized dog, with superior qualities for, obedience, tracking, show, agility, therapy and herding.  In other words, an all around dog!!   There are definitely two types of Aussies and they are somewhat different in appearance, perhaps in some lines, temperament as well.  If you are not familiar with the different types, the best thing to do is to attend some ASCA events where you can see both types competing in conformation, herding, obedience and agility.  Depending on the type that you prefer, be sure to select a breeder that produces what you like and will fit the best in your home.  Do your research and find a reputable breeder that knows the breed thoroughly and is willing to discuss and answer any questions you may have.

Australian Shepherds are normally good with children and friendly with everyone.  However, the breed tends to be somewhat reserved around strangers and protective of their home and family.  Obedience training is highly recommended and you will find that   they are very eager to please. They are considered “‘people” dogs and desire to be a part of the family.  You will need to have the time to spend with them.

Aussies are considered very healthy dogs and can live up to 12 years plus, so ownership can be a long time commitment.  Aussies are a long haired and double coated breed and they require regular brushing, bathing and nail trimming, etc.   Aussies are a fun breed to own, easily trained, super smart and have a willingness to please.  These are very special dogs, with lots of character and deserve caring and understanding homes.
